Why Moss Is More Than a Cosmetic Problem

Moss thrives in shaded, moisture-retaining areas of a roof, typically the north-facing slope or sections beneath overhanging trees. As it spreads, moss holds moisture against the shingle surface far longer than the shingle was designed to handle, which accelerates granule loss and, in more advanced cases, allows moss roots to work their way under shingle edges and lift them.

Left untreated for multiple seasons, moss growth can shorten the effective lifespan of an otherwise healthy roof by years, which is why we treat moss removal as a preventative maintenance service rather than a purely cosmetic one.

Soft Washing vs Pressure Washing

Pressure washing a roof is one of the fastest ways to strip granules and shorten shingle life, which is why we never use it. Soft washing uses a low-pressure application of a moss and algae treatment solution that kills growth at the root without blasting away the protective granule layer, followed by a gentle rinse.

Preventing Regrowth With Zinc or Copper Strips

Once moss is removed, we install zinc or copper strips along the ridge line. Rain washing over these metals releases trace ions that are inhospitable to moss and algae regrowth, which meaningfully extends the time before the treatment needs to be repeated compared to a one-time cleaning with no prevention step.

When Moss Has Already Caused Shingle Damage

If lifted shingles or granule loss from long-term moss growth has already compromised sections of the roof, cleaning alone will not restore them. We will identify affected areas during the inspection and let you know whether spot repairs or a broader replacement makes more sense before moss removal begins.
